North Padre Island sits between Gulf surf and the shallow Upper Laguna Madre, with the national seashore extending south from Corpus Christi.

Two nights suit a focused North Padre and national-seashore trip. South Padre belongs in a separate stay rather than a same-weekend detour.

A beachfront North Padre hotel with direct Gulf access, many ocean-view rooms, indoor and outdoor bars, a fitness room, guest laundry, and dog-friendly accommodations.

Main activity

Gulf beach and lagoon water

This itinerary stays in the Corpus Christi end of Padre Island. Use South Padre Island as a separate base when the resort beach, wildlife centers, or Lower Laguna Madre are the priority.

Gulf surf and Laguna Madre shallows

Malaquite faces the Gulf; Bird Island Basin faces the lagoon. Wind and water can feel completely different across the narrow barrier island.

Friday

Cross the causeway and reach the Gulf before dinner.

Check in on North Padre, then walk Whitecap Beach or the seawall area while daylight remains. Keep dinner close to the island rather than returning across the causeway.

Saturday

Malaquite morning, Bird Island Basin afternoon.

Start at Malaquite Visitor Center, stay on the pavement unless the vehicle and current beach conditions support more, then cross to the Laguna Madre for a wind-and-water check.

7:00 AM

Breakfast

Eat early or carry breakfast south.

Stop at Island Joes for coffee and breakfast food or use Trailer Waves for a quick drink, with current hours confirmed. Bring the rest of the day's water and food before entering the national seashore, and leave nothing accessible to wildlife.

2:00 PM

Afternoon

Cross to Bird Island Basin.

The Laguna Madre is shallow but exposed. Watch wind, heat, lightning, launch traffic, and the group's return ability before paddling or windsurfing.

A guided bay-fishing outing for visitors who want to spend time on the water around South Padre Island.

Sunday

Packery Channel and one last beach walk.

Choose the Gulf or channel side according to wind and surf, then leave enough time for bridge traffic and the drive through Corpus Christi.

Choose breakfast, coffee, or a short walk.

Choose Island Joes for a sit-down coffee and breakfast or Trailer Waves for a quicker drink, after confirming current hours. Carry water for the channel and beach, and do not assume pier, jetty, or construction access from an older map.
